Why networking is for computers...

Writer: Lisa AskinsLisa Askins

When someone invites me to “network” I sigh.  I might even groan.  The thought of mingling about starting conversation around a cocktail table is uncomfortable.   “Networking” is good for my career but a reluctant priority.  However, building relationships is key.  If you are attending PBWC this month,  I encourage you to have a conversation and meet interesting people.  Replace the concept of “networking” with a focus on building relationships and creating advocates.  An advocate knows you, knows your work and appreciates both.  You have many advocates in your circle, and these are the relationships that matter.  Some advocates may become sponsors and actively support your promotion or next step.  While you are lunching, learning and conversing, take time to make a meaningful connection.
